An ASSE 5110 Tester certification is valid for three years. That is the entire rule, and it is less forgiving than the original exam ever was. You earned the credential once, through a minimum 40-hour training course, a 100-question written exam with a 70 percent passing score, and a hands-on practical covering ASSE 1013, 1015, 1020 and 1056 assemblies. Keeping the credential takes far less effort than earning it, but it demands that effort on a fixed schedule, and the schedule does not care whether it lands in the middle of your busiest testing season.

For the 5110 Tester credential, recertification requires a minimum 8-hour class, a 50-question written exam, and a hands-on practical. Compare that to the initial certification and the logic is clear. The 40-hour course and 100-question exam established that you understand cross-connection control theory, hydraulics, assembly selection and test procedures from a standing start. The 8-hour recert assumes you have been doing the work and checks that your knowledge is still current and your hands still perform the procedures correctly.

That assumption is worth taking seriously. Three years is long enough for habits to drift. A tester who has spent three years testing mostly one assembly type can get rusty on the others, and the practical does not grade on what you happen to test most often. Renew five months early and your new three-year period still runs from your original expiry date, not from the day you sat the recert class. You give up nothing by renewing early. This single rule is the difference between a calm renewal and a scramble, and a surprising number of testers ignore it every cycle.

Think about what the six-month window buys you. Recert classes are run by ASSE Accredited Schools, and schools set their own schedules. A school near you might run recert sessions a handful of times per year, and sessions fill. If you wait until the final weeks of your certification, you are betting that a seat exists, that the date fits around your booked test work, and that nothing goes wrong on exam day. If you start six months out, a full class is an inconvenience. You book the next one. If you start three weeks out, a full class is a lapse.

The window also absorbs failure. Nobody plans to miss a passing score on a 50-question exam covering material they work with daily, but people have bad days, and the practical is graded on procedure, not on reputation. A tester who attempts recertification early and stumbles has months to retake. A tester who attempts it in the last week has nothing. The six-month rule converts a single high-stakes deadline into a wide, low-stakes season, and it costs you exactly zero days of certification time. There is no argument for ignoring it.

The rule in one line

What the 8-hour recert class covers

The recert class is a minimum of 8 hours, delivered by an ASSE Accredited School. Schools build their own course materials, so emphasis varies, but the destination is the same in every classroom: you walk out ready to pass a 50-question written exam and demonstrate correct procedure on the bench.

Go in ready to have your habits corrected. Working testers accumulate shortcuts, and some shortcuts are harmless while others quietly invalidate a test. The classroom portion of recertification is the one time every three years when someone whose job is teaching the procedure watches the field drift and pushes it back toward the standard. The testers who get the most from the day are the ones who ask about the steps they have started skipping, not the ones trying to run out the clock.

Schedules and pricing come from the schools themselves, not from ASSE, so your first practical step in any renewal cycle is contacting Accredited Schools in your region and getting real dates on the calendar. Do this early. School calendars are the constraint you control least, which is exactly why the six-month window exists.

The 50-question written exam

The recert written exam for the 5110 Tester is 50 questions, half the length of the initial 100-question exam. Shorter does not mean easier per question. With fewer questions, each one carries more weight, and the exam still has to sample the same body of knowledge: theory, assembly identification, test procedure, and the situations where a test result means the assembly fails. Prepare for it the way you prepared the first time, just on a faster schedule.

The best preparation is honest self-assessment before the class, not cramming after it. Write down the four assembly families from your original practical, ASSE 1013, 1015, 1020 and 1056, and next to each one note when you last tested one in the field. The gaps in that list are your study plan. A tester whose work is dominated by irrigation backflow will be strong on some assemblies and thin on others, and the exam does not weight questions by your personal job mix.

The practical: your hands get graded again

Recertification includes a hands-on practical exam. You will run test procedures under observation, with an evaluator checking sequence, technique and interpretation. This is the portion working testers most often assume they cannot fail, and it is the portion where drift shows. Hose discipline, valve sequencing, bleeding air correctly, reading the gauge without leading it, recording what the gauge says rather than what the assembly usually does: all of it is visible to an evaluator in a way it is never visible on a routine job.

The fix is cheap. In the weeks before your recert date, slow down on real jobs and run the full textbook procedure on every assembly you touch, in order, no shortcuts. You are converting billable field time into exam preparation. Testers who do this walk into the practical having already rehearsed dozens of times on live equipment. Testers who do not are rehearsing for the first time in front of the person grading them.

What a lapse actually costs

Now the part that matters more than any exam detail. Most testing work exists because water authorities require assemblies to be tested by an approved tester, and authorities maintain lists of who qualifies. Being current is typically the price of admission to that list. Let the certification lapse and, in many jurisdictions, you stop being an approved tester until you are current again. Exactly how each authority handles a lapse varies, which is why you confirm the local rules with your water authority or state program rather than assuming. But the safe planning assumption is simple: expired means not working.

Walk through what that does to a one-truck testing operation. Your customer list is an annuity. Assemblies need periodic testing, customers call the tester who did it last time, and the water authority accepts your reports because your credential is current. A lapse interrupts every link in that chain at once. You cannot file passing reports the authority will accept. Customers with compliance deadlines cannot wait for you, so they call someone else, and the someone else who tests their assemblies this cycle is the incumbent next cycle. The lapse itself might be short. The customer damage is not.

There is also the referral layer. Plumbing contractors, irrigation companies and property managers who feed you work are vouching for you when they hand out your number. The first time a referral bounces because your name dropped off the approved list, the referrer starts keeping a second name in their phone. None of this appears on any ASSE document, and all of it is the real price of missing a renewal window. Measured against an 8-hour class and two exams, a lapse is one of the most expensive scheduling failures available to you in this trade.

Confirm locally

Jurisdictions differ. Some accept or require ASSE certification, others operate through ABPA or state and water-authority programs, and lapse handling is a local matter. Confirm the rules with your water authority or state program before assuming anything about grace periods or reinstatement.

Booking through an ASSE Accredited School

Recertification classes are delivered by ASSE Accredited Schools. The schools control their own schedules and their own pricing, so treat renewal like any other supply problem: identify your options early, get dates in writing, and book the seat rather than the intention. If more than one school is within reach, compare calendars first. The right class is the one that exists on a date well inside your six-month window, with enough runway behind it for a retake if you need one.

When you contact a school, confirm three things: that the session covers your credential, that it includes the written and practical exam components you need rather than classroom hours alone, and what you are expected to bring. Then put the class date, your expiry date, and a retake buffer on the same calendar so the geometry of your renewal is visible at a glance.

Your test kit paperwork is part of the renewal

A current certification attached to an undocumented gauge is half a renewal. Water authorities commonly require periodic gauge calibration with documented accuracy for the differential-pressure test kit your reports depend on, and the details are set locally, so confirm the expectation with your water authority. The point for planning purposes is that your kit has its own paper trail, and the smart move is to synchronize it with your certification cycle instead of tracking two unrelated clocks.

When you sit down to book your recert class, pull the kit's calibration documentation the same day. If it will not be comfortably current through your next working season, schedule calibration alongside the class. A tester who renews the credential and the kit paperwork together walks into the new cycle with nothing hanging over them, and has a clean answer ready the day an authority or a customer asks for documentation.

The countdown plan: working back from expiry

Here is the whole renewal as a countdown you can reuse every cycle. It assumes nothing goes right: classes fill, exams get failed, calibration takes longer than promised. If everything goes smoothly you finish absurdly early, which is the correct way to finish.

If you hold more than one ASSE credential

Many working testers stack credentials from the 5000 series, and every one of them runs on the same three-year period. The recert workload differs by credential: 5110 Tester, 5130 Assembly Repairer and 5140 Fire Sprinkler Cross-Connection Control Tester each require a minimum 8-hour class, a 50-question written exam and a hands-on practical. The 5120 Cross-Connection Control Surveyor requires an 8-hour class, a 25-question written exam and a practical. The 5150 Program Administrator requires an 8-hour class and a 25-question written exam.

If your credentials expire at different points in the year, the six-month window is your alignment tool. Because early renewal never costs time, you can pull renewals earlier within their windows across cycles until your credentials renew together in a single coordinated effort. One season of classes every three years beats a rolling drizzle of separate deadlines, each one capable of lapsing independently while you are busy tracking the others.

Make renewal boring

The three-year clock never stops and never negotiates, and that is actually good news, because a fixed, known, generous deadline is the easiest kind to beat. The testers who get burned are not the ones who found the material too hard. They are the ones who treated a known date as a distant problem until it was a current emergency. Use the six-month window every cycle, book through an Accredited School early, rehearse the practical on paid work, renew the gauge paperwork in the same push, and set the next reminder before you leave the building.

Do that and recertification becomes the most boring event in your business, which is exactly what a compliance deadline should be. Your customers never learn what your expiry date is, your water authority never has a reason to look twice at your listing, and the clock resets for another three years while your competitors are still refreshing a school's schedule page hoping for a seat.
